Purpose The ultimate purpose of probation is to rehabilitate offenders. Probation provides the opportunity for offenders to prove they can be productive members of the community by abiding by the conditions set forth by the court. Although probation is meant to be a punitive measure, it is a privilege, not a right. It is an alternative to incarceration, and is only granted to offenders deemed worthy of and well-suited for supervision. Responsibilities The Probation Department is responsible for assessing, screening, and supervising offenders considered for and/or placed on a term of supervision. The Probation Department makes recommendations to the judge for sentencings and violations, and provides testimony as needed. Sobriety Court The 43rd District Court Sobriety Court Program was founded by Judge Joseph Longo in 2003. The program’s primary purpose is to promote public safety and reduce recidivism rates for individuals convicted of drunk driving offenses. Our program is certified by the State Court Administrative Office, and supervised by a Certified Criminal Justice Professional. Transfer Cases Sobriety Court accepts transfers from jurisdictions that do not offer a sobriety court program.
